jewish-observerSources report that The Jewish Observer will be shutting down its operation after over four decades of publishing. Published by Agudas Yisroel of America, the magazine has struggled in recent years, with dwindling readership and increasing costs. Published since 1963, it was printed nine months a year; the January and February issues were combined, and there were no issues in July or August. The magazine’s website contains PDF copies of portions of some previous issues dating back to 2002.

The Jewish Observer was founded by Dr. Ernst L. Bodenheimer and Rabbi Moshe Sherer. For the last many year, it was been led by its esteemed editor, Rabbi Nisson Wolpin.

Its editorial board members were Rabbi Joseph Elias, Rabbi Abba Brudny, Reb Yoseph Friedenson, Rabbi Yisroel Meir Kirzner, Rabbi Nosson Shcerman and Professor Aaron Twerski.

Sources say that a consensus was reached by the Agudah, led by the Rosh Agudas Yisroel, Rav Yaakov Perlow, the Novominsker Rebbe, that the time has come to close the magazine.

  1. i am a employee of agudas yisroel and i can say that it is true they are closing down the the jewish observer. it was a decision made by the new chairman of agudas yeshiva, Mr. George weinberger

  2. Personally they have become obsolete years ago. There was never room for respectfully discussing subjects with differing POV.

  3. It’s sad to read the comments placed here so far. In my opinion, JO has been the definitive voice of what the Torah opinion is on world events. I lived out of town during the first gulf war — what enlightenment I had when I read JO’s point of view on the event. The same for 9-11, the financial crisis, and a host of other situations that we as Jews need to interpret. JO has had access to the best Torah minds and let us read their “take” on the subject. There have been a flood of less-challenging, glitzy magazines on the newsstands and it’s easy to run to them. But there never will be another JO, and I’m glad I have my issues safely shelved. Furthermore, the editor, Rabbi Nisson Wolpin, managed the magazine with eloquence, compassion, skill, and daas Torah. May Hashem show him the next right venue to grace with his talents. They will be the lucky ones.

  4. I guess they didn’t discuss YOUR pov :).—thats where you are wrong. You might not be the searcher who is interested in deeper understanding of issue.

  5. The Jewish Observer is missed very very much. It was amazing. It was the voice of genuine orthodox Jewry. Still waiting for it to come back… It was a tremendous Kiddush Hashem.
