The Spanish government has taken another step in approving legislation aimed at granting citizenship to Sephardic Jews who were expelled nearly 500 years ago during the Spanish Inquisition.

Spain’s Council of Ministers approved the draft legislation on Friday, which set forth the criteria for citizenship.

The criterion includes a Spanish culture test as well as having prospective citizens’ heritage checked by the Spanish Federation of Jewish Communities or rabbis in their local Jewish community.

The next step for the legislation to become law is approval by Spain’s parliament, which is controlled by the country’s conservative People’s Party. That party strongly supports the bill.

Spanish Justice Minister Alberto Ruiz Gallardon first introduced the legislation in early February. Gallardon said at the time that the bill would repair “one of the most significant errors” in Spanish history.

“With this gesture Spain is doing justice and fixing the mistake that led to the expulsion of the Jews,” the Federation of Jewish Communities in Spain said in a statement.

  1. don’t let this kind gesture melt you to go back to Spain, this only means they need more population which means more money from taxes, etc. Go to Israel or stay in Israel that is a safer place to be.

  2. Spain is in a terrible condition.

“Spain’s employment statistics still have the power to take your breath away. Nearly six out of 10 under-25s in Spain (57 per cent) are out of work – and that does not include those who have given up looking for work and are “economically inactive”. Total Spanish unemployment in the first three months of this year jumped by another 237,000 to 6.2 million. The country is losing 3,581 jobs a day. Only Greece has a worse record.”

All the young people are leaving the country as there are no jobs there, and it’s full of illegal immigrants, and it’s still highly antisemitic.
