oregon-school-shootingPolice say one student was killed and a teacher was wounded in a shooting at Reynolds High School in Troutdale, Oregon, today. The gunman is also dead, according to police. Police were called to respond at around 8 a.m. PT. FBI agents and SWAT were also sent to the school. By 9:15 a.m., police reported that the situation was stabilized. At an afternoon press conference, police said it has tenatively identified the shooter but is not confident enough to release details. A rifle was used in the attack.

A student told The Oregonian she saw an injured teacher leaving the school, which has 2,800 students and is the second-largest high school in the state. Some students have said the shooting occurred in the gymnasium.

One student texted: “Happened in the gym. u could hear shots from outsdode, 2 minutes later lockdown.” Max Maydew, a grandfather of one of the high-school students and a longtime resident, said “This shouldn’t happen in Troutdale. You don’t expect something like that to happen in your hometown.”

This is at least the 74th U.S. school shooting since the massacre in Newtown, Connecticut left 26 dead in December 2012. Read more at The Oregonian.

If security guards at school were armed, this might have been able to be prevented.

What the gun lobbyists don’t understand is that all they’re doing is preventing upstanding citizens from obtaining guns to protect themselves. The crazies will get them no matter what.
