marriageIf you hate your mother-in-law so much that you’d rather have a root canal than visit her, you are not alone. A new survey has found that many women think of their husbands’ moms as “monsters-in-law” and would do almost anything to get out of spending time with them. Fifty-one percent say they would rather stay home and clean the house than have to listen to their mothers-in-law, according to the report by iVillage, a Web site that boasts 30 million visitors a month.

It also found that 36 percent of women would rather visit a doctor, 30 percent would rather do jury duty and 28 percent would prefer to either do their taxes or get a root canal.

“It’s such a complicated and charged relationship,” said Kelly Wallace, the chief correspondent for iVillage.

“A mother-in-law might be weighing in on how they are taking care of their kids or how they are dealing with their marriage.

The editors at iVillage produced the study in anticipation of Mother-in-Law’s Day next Sunday. Even they were surprised at the strong anti-mom-in-law sentiment.

“We were taken aback by the honesty of women, that they would rather do a lot of terrible things than spend time with their mother-in-law,” she said.

The study also found that 28 percent of women reported a “terrible” or “bad” relationship with their hubby’s mom.

And when it comes to kids, the feelings were even stronger — 76 percent said they would never seek parenting advice from a mother-in-law. Eighty-three percent said they would never ask for relationship advice from their mother-in-law.

Of course, many women do have good relationships with their mothers-in-law.

When asked who they might like to have as a mother-in-law, 17 percent of the women said they would like Hillary Rodham Clinton and 9 percent said Sarah Palin.

  1. Not amusing. I still remember one of my eidim’s chaveirim making shvigger jokes in his drosho at a sheva brochos. My wife and I both thought it was immature.

  2. Not a good idea to involve parents or in-laws in personal issues, but I would certainly prefer to visit my mother-in-law than to get a root canal – or any dental work, for that matter!

  3. We should mention what it is that mother-in-laws do. There are way too many marriages that have been destroyed by mother-in-laws. Frum marriages.

About three years after the divorce they begin regretting it

  4. As a mother-in-law, mother, daughter, daughter-in-law, this survey is SO SO SAD. Would hope that a survey in the Religious Community would bring about a different percentage….

BTW does Mother-in-Law also include the mother of the wife???????

  5. Dear No. 10. The statistics in the frum community would be much worse

    1. We generally live in close proximity to each other and call more often.
    2. Our mothers in law are only mix into someone elses business “for your own good”. “I really don’t care what you do B’B’BUT…yada yada” (did you ever hear this statement before?)

  6. I am a daughter-in-law and a mother-in-law. I think daughters-in-laws should stop being so immature and bratty. Mothers-in-laws are people also and deserve at least the respect you give other people.

  7. I have B”H Kain Ayin Horah more than half a dozen childrens-in-law, and they call me all the time and ask me for advice and invite me over etc. So I would venture to say they’d prefer being with me than getting a root canal any day.

  8. I agree with #14 – the stories I hear about the behavior of our newlywed girls – frum girls from Bais Yaakov schools. They behave like spoiled brats, expect everything and complain about everything – i personally am ashamed when I hear of their lack of derech eretz for their husbands parents – especially the mothers.
