planeYou’ve gotten through airport security, and you’re settling in on the plane, confident that you’re safe and sound.

Not so fast.

An investigation by a team from “The Doctors” TV show found that the filth on commercial airliners may truly be hazardous to your health.

On “CBS This Morning: Saturday,” Dr. Travis Stork, host of “The Doctors,” had the dirt on the probe.

He said unwashed blankets and pillows, unsanitary tray tables and soiled floors ranked high on the list of filthy cabin items.

Stork stressed that he flies “virtually every week, so I don’t want to overstate it to the point of saying it’s dangerous to get on an airline.

” … Probably the number one risk, quite honestly, getting on a plane, is just catching a cold or the flu. If you think about it, you’re in crowded quarters, people aren’t necessarily washing their hands. You don’t know who was there before you. Who touched that magazine? Who touched the tray table? Viruses can live up to 72 hours on a plastic surface, like a tray table. You have to be aware of that.”

One piece of advice from Stork: Always wear socks into plane bathrooms, because you never know how long it’s been since the restroom floors were washed.

  1. why are you only concerned about the outside? Take fresh garlic and take immune enhancing herbs. y ou can get them in the health food stores, they sell them kosher.

  2. I agree. I’m a Victim, and pushing in passengers like sardines doesn’t make the situation any better.
ow, El al is adding more seats.

  3. Garlic? I thought we were trying to get rid of microbes, not vampires! The best defense is to stay in general good health – proper diet, exercise, enough sleep (VERY important), stress reduction. You can’t neglect your whole lifestyle and think that popping a couple of herb capsules is going to defend you. Maybe in addition to – but not in place of – general healthy habits.

  4. #4 – there’s no air circulation. The air in the cabin just keeps getting pushed around by the ventilation system, with no fresh air from outside, because up where the plane is the air pressure is too low to open anything up. Suppposedly they filter it, but you’re breathing a soup of germs that everyone else has breathed too. At least on the subway the doors open at every stop. Still, it’s a good thing to be careful on buses and trains, too.
