sleepNew research shows middle-age and older adults who take naps may be at an increased risk of dying.

Experts discovered naps were linked with an increased risk of dying from respiratory diseases.

The study found that those between 40 and 79 years of age, who napped daily for less than an hour, were 14 percent more likely to die over a 13 year period compared to those who did not nap.

Longer naps were linked with an even higher risk, so people whose daily naps lasted an hour or more were 32 percent more likely to die.

Experts say it may not be napping that’s unhealthy, but rather, that those who tend to nap also have undiagnosed medical conditions that affect their risk of dying.
Many factors were considered for this study such as age, gender, body mass index and whether participants smoked and how often they exercised.

  1. And if you frighten these people into not taking their needed naps then they die even faster. A link is useful as an introduction for further research. It is ridiculous to broadcast this stuff without any understanding of what it means, if anything.

  2. As my statistics prof used to say, over and over again: Correlation is not causation! There is no proof here that napping causes death, although people with no science education might draw that conclusion. As the article later stresses, it could be that increased napping is caused by the disease which eventually kills the person.

For example, sleep apnea is associated with higher death rates, and it causes daytime naps. Other respiratory problems will also cause broken sleep, resulting in napping. If you have trouble sleeping, see your doctor.

  3. This is the crux of the matter:
“Experts say it may not be napping that’s unhealthy, but rather, that those who tend to nap also have undiagnosed medical conditions that affect their risk of dying.”
So what was the issue: The need for nap or a nap?
You have to know how to read statistics, which the headlines should be instead, “Those who need to take naps have shorter life span” rather than blaming the naps.
It’s probably all false anyway since many countries take siestas and they are quite healthy.
