Study: Zebras’ Stripes Keeps Them Cool

zebraIt turns out that zebras’ strips serve a higher purpose than making them look ridiculously cool. In fact, it is pure niflaos haBorei. A study published Tuesday in Royal Society Open Science suggests that the stripes help cool the animals down.

Zebras in warmer places have more stripes, adding further support to this theory. The stripes may also have helped zebras ward off illness.

Biting-flies, which are disease carriers, tend not to land on surfaces with stripes, so those stripes may serve two functions. Read more at National Geographic.
