‘Super’ Banana to Be Tested on Humans

bananasScientists believe we may soon be able to save millions of lives in Africa, one banana at a time. Researches at the Queensland University of Technology (QUT) have announced they will begin testing their genetically engineered pro-vitamin A banana on humans and have shipped them to the U.S. for a six-week trial.

These bananas have been enriched with alpha and beta carotene to help elevate the body’s vitamin A levels. As a result, the flesh is more orange than a typical one, but the discoloration is a small price to pay for a fruit that could have a huge public health impact.

Professor James Dale of QUT said vitamin A deficiency is responsible for “650,000-700,000 children world-wide dying each year and at least another 300,000 going blind.”

Dale is confident it’s just a matter of time before the “super” banana is saving lives across the globe. “We know our science will work,” he said. Read more at AFP.

  1. Why shouldn’t the GMO foods be labeled?! If you want to see a few decades of safety record before you put GMO into your mouth – you should have a choice; if you are willing to take a GMO risk for the sake of cheaper or more nutritious food -you should have a choice. What can possible go wrong with playing genetics with our environment and the food supply?-what can possibly go wrong with a magic material that saves human lives from fire?!-wondering what was once referred to as “the magic material”?-asbestos.

  2. This is shtick. It would be cheaper to give the millions of people who are deficient in these vitamins (and therefore dying) a multivitamin or Vitamin A supplement every day (non-kosher vitamins are cheaper than sandpaper) than to give them a daily genetically engineered banana.

I get it – these bananas will be healthier. But saving lives? Seriously? BIGGEST Shtick!!!

  3. I agree with the Rebbe. This isn’t a lifesaver. I wasted my time clicking on the link. False advertising, if you ask me. This article is just as ‘genetically-engineered’ as these bananas.

This is what I have to say:

Stop genetically modifying bananas, and eat a carrot instead.
