brooklyn-bridgeThe NYPD shut down traffic in both directions on the Brooklyn Bridge on Monday evening  due to a suspicious vehicle causing a traffic nightmare.

Police were searching and eventually seized an abandoned SUV with no license plate located in the middle of the Manhattan-bound span. The pedestrian walkway was also shut down in both directions.

The call came in around 5:15 p.m. and 45-minutes later the bomb squad was on the scene.

The search caused traffic problems all over Lower Manhattan.

“It’s pretty bad, pretty bad. They got people directing up there, but the volume is just too much,” TriBeCa resident Sal Chiulla told CBS 2′s Jessica Schneider.

The operation created tense moments for New Yorkers who didn’t know what was in the vehicle.

“Definitely a little scary. But, I’m sure our police are on top of it and have it all cleared out. Everyone seems to be safe and getting where they need to be going,” Lori Weitzel said.

The Manhattan Bridge was jammed heading into Brooklyn around 6 p.m., according to WCBS 880′s Chris Maget.

The ‘all-clear’ was sounded around 7 p.m.
