hot-weather-2New York – Temperatures will be soaring once again Today, with highs expected to reach the upper 90s.

A heat advisory remains in effect until 7 p.m. with heat index values from 100 to 102 degrees. An air quality alert is also in effect from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. in the Bronx, Kings, Nassau, New York, Queens, Richmond, Rockland, Suffolk and Westchester counties.

Today’s high of 97 degrees in New York City is expected to tie the record temperature last set in 1988. A new record high temperature of 98 degrees was set Wednesday in Newark, breaking the old record of 97 set in 1953.

The first steamy night of summer saw scattered but widespread power outages that stretched from New York to New Jersey and Connecticut.

Power grids across the area were maxed out by the demand for air conditioning in near triple digit temperatures.

The lights blinked off in one Wantaugh neighborhood around 9 p.m., leaving residents to scramble for flashlights and batteries.

While the loss of electricity was an inconvenience for many in our area, it was a real problem for others, like 86-year-old Madeline Manette.

She just got out of the hospital and was helpless to do anything as her apartment got hotter.

“It’ll be too hot to sleep and I can’t walk, so I’m stuck wherever I am, on the bed or in the chair,” she said.

Con Edison spokesman Mike Clendenon said the utility is going to be taxed Thursday and power officials are now asking residents to use electricity sparingly.

“We could approach an all-time record today,” said Clendenon. “So we’re just asking people to conserve as best as possible.”

Con Ed reduced voltage to some neighborhoods in Brooklyn and Queens as a precaution on Wednesday because of problems with electrical equipment. Customers have also been asked to turn off non-essential appliances in those areas.

As the temperatures rise, there are things you can do to keep cool.

Doctors say eating fresh fruits and vegetables with a lot of water in them can help keep your internal temperature down.

“Try to eat a light meal before so the body is not taking a lot of energy to digest those foods,” said Dr. Lisa Ganjhu from St. Lukes-Roosevelt Hospital.

Also, remember to drink plenty of water and limit any strenuous activity.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg also reminded New Yorkers that they have a place to go to escape the heat.

“We all think we’re tough and nobody thinks that this is a big deal, but sadly, every year, we have to re-learn the lesson that this is a big deal,” Bloomberg said. “One of the best ways to stay cool, if you’re talking to somebody without air conditioning, is to go to one of the city’s cooling centers.”

Nearly 500 cooling centers are now open throughout the five boroughs. Call 311 to find the location of a cooling center near you.
