rav-yisroel-belskyIn the most recent OU Webcast with the OU Poskim, the following question was received: “What chumrah should one take on as a zechus for a choleh?”

Rabbi Safran, the moderator, directed the question to Rav Yisroel Belsky.

Rav Belsky responded that the chumrah should be in an area in which he – the questioner – is weak.

Rabbi Safran commented that this presupposes that the mezakeh recognizes that he has an area of weakness.

Rav Belsky’s response was that the first chumrah to take upon oneself is to recognize that one has an area of weakness.

  1. It would have been preferable to cite the true source of the actual write-up of the webcast quote. It appeared in Rabbi Dovid Cohen’s KASHEIR HADAVAR, a collection of Rav Belsky’s piskei dinim.

  2. From Brachos 5a:
    ??? ??? ??????? ?? ????: ?? ???? ??? ??????? ???? ???? ????? ??????, ???’ “????? ?????? ??????? ?????? ?? ?'”. ???? ??? ??? ???? ????? ????, ????? “???? ???? ??? ?????? ?? ??????? ??????”.

It looks like the same idea – that if you can’t find any flaws in yourself, you are not looking well enough…
