Taliban Takes First Major City Since 9/11

talibanThe Taliban took over a major Afghan city for the first time since 2001, officials confirmed Monday, after months of attacks on the capital of Kunduz province.

The New York Times reports Taliban fighters had set fire to police stations by nightfall and began raiding jewelry stores.

While the government promised a counterattack, sources on the ground say that hasn’t yet happened, and that senior officials ignored a steady growth of Taliban power in recent months. Read more at The New York Times.
