tax-returnThe deadline to file your tax returns is tomorrow, April 15, at midnight. For those who have not filed, there are still options and some time to complete them. The United States Internal Revenue Service (IRS) is advising those who can’t meet the filing deadline to apply for an extension which would require the return to be filed by Oct. 15. To file for an extension, use IRS form 4868, which must be filed by April 15 either electronically or through regular mail.

The IRS advises that an extension of time to file is not an extension of time to pay. Those who owe taxes can make a payment when they file the extension either by mailing a check or by several electronic payment methods.

With less than 40 hours remaining to file 2008 income tax forms without incurring a penalty or seeking an extension, local tax preparers and post offices are bracing for brisk business. However, the age of computers has somewhat taken the edge off the last-minute rush at post offices, according to an Internal Revenue Service spokesman.

Eric Erickson, an IRS media relations spokesman in the Midwest, said there is still time to meet the April 15 deadline for filing income tax returns, especially if using the electronic filing process.

“If they can’t get them filed by Wednesday, they can file an extension. This gives you more time to file, but not more time to pay,” Erickson said.

Erickson said he used the electronic filing process for filing his tax return this year. “It didn’t take me even an hour so using the electronic filing is a good way to go,” he noted. “However, if you plan to mail your return, you should check with your local post office to get it postmarked before midnight April 15.”
