Tefillin Stolen From Bochurim Visiting Chicago

Young yeshiva students visiting Chicago did not feel Chicago’s warmth Tuesday night after one of their vans was broken into and some of their luggage taken.

The 32 Jewish boys from Yeshiva Beth Yehudah in Southfield were celebrating their 8th grade graduation with a trip to Windy City.

While the group was on a Chicago water taxi and seeing downtown sites on Tuesday evening, one of their vans was broken into and the luggage of 10 boys was stolen.

According to Chicago Rabbi Yitzchok Ehrman, a friend of the organizers of the trip, inside the taken luggage were sets of tefillin worth $2,000-$3,000 each.

“It was the most valuable thing financially and emotional,” Rabbi Ehrman said. “There were boys that literally started tearing about this tefillin.”

Rabbi Ehrman said he and a chaperone drove through alleys all night hoping whoever stole the luggage had discarded the religious items. They found nothing. The rabbi was able borrow 10 of them for the boys until the tefillins are replaced.

Rabbi Ehrman is still holding out hope they’ll be found.

He said he hopes there was security video from the nearby train station in order to track down whoever stole the luggage. Read more here.

  1. “It was the most valuable thing financially and emotional,” Rabbi Ehrman said. “There were boys that literally started tearing about this tefillin.”

did he have to say financially before emotional? 🙁

  2. They steal and they killed in Chicago. Chicago is a very dangerous city please avoid it if you wear tefillin or you want to remain alive. Look at the shooter yesterday in Virginia guess where he came from? Illinois. Very dangerous in Chicago be aware very aware.

      • So Chicago is the most dangerous place, because 1 shooter in Virginia, cam from the same state…
I fail to see the logic in that.
FYI, there are mugging and shooting in Brooklyn, LA and every major city every day, (and I’m sure in Chicago too) but many millions go about their lives quite happily without any problems.
Also, why would you bring up shootings in Chicago, when this story was about a theft. While very sad that they lost their teffillin, it also happens in New York, London and Australia. Opportunists will steal things wherever you go.
