rav-elyashiv2Tefillah gatherings are being held at dozens of locations around Eretz Yisroel as the posek hador, Rav Yosef Shalom Elyashiv, will undergo surgery today to repair an artery near his heart. The surgery is scheduled to take place at 8:30 p.m. Israel time.

Rav Aharon Leib Shteinman has directed chadorim to have talmidim recite Tehillim for Rav Elyashiv.

At 8 p.m., a large atzeres tefillah will be held at the Kosel, under the direction of Rav Shmuel Rabinovitz, rov of the Kosel.

The surgery will be performed at Shaare Tzedek Medical Center in Yerushalayim by a world-renowned expert in heart treatment from the United States.

The cardiologist analyzed Rav Elyashiv seven years ago after he was admitted to intensive care with real danger to his life. The physician, flown from the United States, identified a  problematic artery that was causing intensive bleeding. The multi-hour surgery at that time was deemed a success. After recently feeling weakness, Rav Elyashiv was admitted to Shaarei Tzedek for extensive testing. The tests were sent for a second opinion to the offices of the expert cardiologist in Manhattan. The doctor pointed out that the artery that was identified seven years ago as being the source of concern is now weak.

All are asked to daven for Rav Yosef Shalom ben Chaya Musha.

As reported here on Matzav.com, on Rosh Chodesh Nissan, Rav Elyashiv marked his 101st birthday.

May Hakadosh Boruch Hu give Rav Elyashiv kochos and gezunt to continue leading Klal Yisroel for many, many more years, amidst good health.

  1. They don’t have any good cardiac surgeons in Eretz Yisroel who can perfrom this surgery?????? Something about this does not sit right with me

  2. THE LAST TIME THEY WERE THINKING ABOUT PERFORMING SURGERY THE ISRAELI DOCTORS GAVE HIM A 5-20% CHANCE FOR SUVIVAL, WHILE DR. CLAIRE THOUGHT HIS METHOD HAD A 90% CHANCE OF SUCCESS. THAT IS WHY THEY DIDN’T USE THE ISRAELI DOCTORS LAST TIME. I THINK ALL WOULD AGREE THAT IT MAKES SENSE TO USE THE SAME DOCTOR AGAIN.

  3. #1 is upset that the surgery was not to take place in Israel.

Perhaps he should read the story again – especially the part where it states that “The surgery will be performed at Shaare Tzedek Medical Center in Yerushalayim by a world-renowned expert in heart treatment from the United States”.
