The JTA reports that the Jewish community in Tehran has canceled social and educational programs out of safety concerns during the current unrest. Sources close to the Jewish community in Iran confirmed today in an e-mail to JTA that there have been no injuries or threats to Jews or Jewish property, but said the measures were taken as a precaution following days of demonstrations in the wake of last week’s voting that re-elected President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.”There really is no problem for the Jews,” said the source, who asked not to be named. “There is only a problem for those who want to take part in the rallies.”
Reportedly the state is limiting the number of e-mails that may be sent per day per address. Facebook accounts have been inaccessible since the election.
Tehran’s Jewish leaders and Jewish members of the Iranian Parliament routinely congratulate the winner of an election, but no such announcement has been reported.
