Tens of Thousands Told To Flee Haifa as Fires Spread

Tens of thousands of Haifa residents in about a dozen neighborhoods evacuated their homes this morning as forest fires raged and threatened the city. Conditions were exacerbated by strong winds and dry conditions.

While most people evacuated themselves, causing traffic tie-ups as they fled the city, medical personnel worked to empty a nursing home in the Romema neighborhood, while kindergartens in Ramot Sapir were told to move out.

There have been about 70 injuries thus far due to the Haifa fires, with Haifa fire department spokesman Uri Chibutro telling Channel 2 news that the city is “in a state of war.”

Arson is suspected in the Haifa fires.
