olmert2Former Prime Minister Ehud Olmert’s prostate cancer is deteriorating, a recent series of tests conducted by doctors at New York’s renowned Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center determined. Olmert, along with his doctors and family are currently examining the possibilities at the former PM’s disposal. At present time it appears there will be no choice but to opt for either surgery or radiation therapy.

Furthermore, it has not yet been decided whether Olmert will be treated in the US or back in Israel.

“Former Prime Minister Ehud Olmert has undergone a series of tests and consultations with a number of medical expert in the United States. The tests indicate a growth of the tumor that necessitates immediate treatment,” Olmert’s media advisor, Amir Dan, said in a written release.

“A course of treatment will be decided on immediately upon his return to Israel, in accordance with the doctors’ recommendations.”

Olmert informed the public of his diagnosis in October 2007.

Prostate cancer is mostly common in men over 50 years of age. Unlike other forms of cancer, cancerous cells in the prostate are common, and a growth can remain unchanged for a long period of time.

The presence of cancerous cells has been documented in nearly a third of men over the age of 50 and in an absolute majority of men over the age of 80.

The cancer’s slow progression often has no noticeable symptoms. There are however cases where the cancer spreads rapidly to other organs, particularly the bones.
