The Great Miracle of the Volcano Shutdown

ash-volcanoA universal crisis, millions of people stranded, billions of dollars lost, and one volcanic eruption in Iceland causes chaos across the European continent. Within all these tumult, one Jew merits a smile of loveliness from the Creator of the World, as if whispering to him – my son, the whole world was not created except for you כל העולם לא נברא אלא בשבילי.

The story begins with a young Yeshiva student, an 18 year old Yerushalmi, that came down with a fulminate hepatic failure and was mortally ill.

With little hope of receiving a liver transplant in Israel, Rav Firer sought to send the boy emergency to Brussels, the world center of liver transplants. The only problem however, is that Brussels under no circumstances transplants non-EU patients in order to save the scanty supply of livers for Europeans. Nevertheless, it was decided to send him to Brussels despite the full knowledge of negligible chance of receiving a liver.

The young Yeshiva student had no choice but to include his name to the long waiting list for a liver transplant. In the meantime, he tried to maintain his learning despite the illness, consciously aware that it will takes weeks, months, and even years till he will be able to be given a new liver. Many patients were on the waiting list, and his name was somewhere on the bottom… And when his turn does finally arrive, it must completely match his blood type and other medical criteria. If it’s not a perfect match, he will need to continue waiting … for a miracle.

However, רבות מחשבות בלב איש ועצת ה’ היא תקום Many thoughts in a man’s heart; nevertheless the counsel of HaShem shall stand. HaShem had a different plan for this young Yeshiva student and HaShem’s loyal servants produced avalanches of hot ash, rock and gas on Europe, causing Europe to completely shut down its skies into a no-fly zone. No one can leave and no one can enter; a self-imposed siege in the euro zone skies. It is during this time that a young religious Yerushalmi man in the capital of Belgium is sitting in the yeshiva learning Torah.

During the course of the shut down airspace above Europe, a person dies in the hospital in the capital of Belgium, a person whom agreed to donate his liver to anyone that might need it. Astonishingly, a liver that is perfectly parametric for our young Yeshiva student.

Health authority of Belgium began searching the liver transplant waiting list but ‘unfortunately’, not even one patient was able to fly into Belgium for the very needed healthy liver transplant due to a volcanic eruption in Iceland.

As they advanced further on the waiting list, they reached the young Yeshiva student. However it was not offered to the boy due to his lack of citizenship. As the clock closed in on the deadline for time in which the the liver’s lifespan for transplanting, the precious healthy liver cannot be wasted and must be swiftly replaced with a diseased liver, no one else was able to arrive in Belgium for the transplant except this young Yerushalmi.

With the clear Divine Intervention, this budding talmid chacham received the liver and is now recovering from surgery.

The enormity of this miracle was even greater after the successful liver transplant. The doctors said that the young yeshiva student’s liver was very deteriorated and diseased and it was a matter of days his liver would stop functioning completely. The doctors unanimously believe that if this young man had to continue waiting for the liver transplant, he would have been long dead.

  1. I like a hashgacha pratis story as well as anyone else, but this story just doesn’t add up. People were travelling all around Europe by train and bus. You didn’t have to go by plane to get around. Belgium is only a few hours by train from many EU countries. Do you mean to tell me that if someone was called for a liver transplant they wouldn’t get to a train to travel to the hospital if they had to? Where is the source for this? I saw it in Hebrew on a charedi website but that doesn’t prove that it’s true.

  2. The story is true. I know the family personally, and I heard the story from another close friend of the family.
However, the story is not yet over as the person still needs a big refuah sheleima, and we daven that the liver not be rejected by his body chas veshalom.

  3. One answer to all your questions. The liver has to be transplanted within several hours and even if people would get on trains they wouldnt of made it in time. So bh it was given to this bochur.

  4. The original first person on the transplant list was in Spain. With every plane NOT flying due to the dangerous ash cloud, they had to find someone quickly and this young yungerleit was able to meet the criteria immediately B’H. Brussels is a one hour ride from Antwerp. Hence the availaibility of the organ B’H. (We know the family.) May he have a complete refuah shelama be karov among all the cholei Yisrael Amen!

  5. It seems a few bits of the story were left out, like why did they decide that even though this guys not a citizen, he should still be able to recieve the transplant, and also for the record adif lichtov bilushoin koidesh shehaoilum loi nivru elu bishvil klal yisroel and this is the raya, it would save us some unnecessary anti shemiyut.

  6. Publicizing this story, even if true is disturbing. One of the headlines could have been, ” God allows tens of goyim to die in order to save yeshiva bochur”. I am very happy for this bochur on a personal level. Just remember that there are many others who were ahead of him and who may not be overjoyed to hear the story.

  7. To #8 Don’t forget all of the trains and buses were packed since the planes were not flying. So for a sick passenger even if he got a ticket for a train it would have been hard to travel.

  8. To answer #6 – according to halacha a Jewish person must be buried with his complete body intact – that includes all his organs. Therefore, a liver may not be extracted from the body.

  9. It so happens, that there were two Hemishe Yingerliet, who desperately needed transplants, and could not get to their destination because of the volcano. It was a real tragedy.

“Please explain why this could not have been done in Israel , with the liver of a deceased Jew”.

Because the rabbonim are strongly and firmly against harvesting organs from dead Jews.

  11. I happen to be quite a close realative to this bochur. To #11 the bochur was not in Antwerp but was in Brussels from the time he arrived there by private jet on Shabboss Chol Hamoed and he had to be in a Hospital as he was a choileh mesucan. I have tried to verify this story (there are so many versions travelling around) I spoke to the boys unlce and he knew nothing about it. Also the part about not being a citizen of the EU the father happens to be a British Citizen and the bochur has an English Passport so that part of the story has no truth. The bochur still needs a big yeshua. Please be mispallel for Eliezer Yaakov ben Chava.

  12. Hashem wants what Hashem wants. There may have been another yid on the list who didn’t get lucky because of where he or she was located. Let’s not go bragging because this one and not that one was fortunate.
