  1. When we realize that we alone must connect to Hashem. Our connection to our source is not dependent on any of the above great Rabbonim; rather our connection is dependent on our pure emuna in Hashem and our acceptance of his ways b’simcha.

  2. I don’t understand. While it’s certainly sad when any Jew is nifter and b’frat gedolim..These are all elderly people…This is just how HaShem runs the world. The next generation of gedolim are “stepping up”…I don’t know if Teshuva would prevent someone who is 100 yrs old from dying? Teshuva is needed in any case but this approach is a little funny…

  3. With a very few exceptions all of the rabbonim listed above had reached a ripe old age and their deaths were perfectly natural.

Yehuda’s shmooze would have had far more force and validity if my description above had been reversed.

Aside from that, who are we to question the ways and methods of the Almighty?

  4. not in any way to belittle anyone on this list (which is obviously somewhat arbitrary in its inclusiveness and the time period covered)…

but when we take a list of tens of rabbonim and refer to all of them as gedolim

(which they may in actuality be; I am in no way passing judgement on anyone, nor am I in anyway remotely qualified to)

we denigrate the term, muddle its usage, and dilute its value, not to mention the kavod of the rabbonim previously referred to as gedloim in earlier times where the term may have been used more judiciously.

Perhaps we should look to finding another term for exceptional Jews, the word gadol should be a term used more exclusively.

(the same can be said for the term Askan, but that’s a different story all-together)

  5. Wait, so if we do teshuva then people will stop dying? Or is it just that rabbonim will stop dying? Or just “gedolim”?

    Seriously, have a little siechel.

  6. …but rather than focusing on the negative, let’s focus on the positive in Am Yisrael! And there’s SO MUCH: Over a million (ken yirbu!) baalei teshuva ba’h! Anahnu maaminim bnei maaminim… 🙂

  7. Yehuda,

I commend you for writing this letter. As a letter on it’s own It is appropriate. Thank you.

How do we do teshuva? Can you please serve as an example? Thank you

Were you correct when you posted your doom prophesies, criticisms and screaming on peoples tragedies? Were bereaving families hurt? Did you hurt family and friends durring their times-of-mourning? (Was Matzav also responsible for posting those comments?)

  8. Please ask your friends all over the world to continue Davening reciting Tehillim learn Torah and contribute to Tzodakah as a Zechus for the famous Magid of the generation Harav Shlomo Brevda Shlita, who is in need of a Refuah Sheleimah.

The Rav Shlita asked that the Olam should please Daven for him, his condition is critical and painful.

The name for Tehillim is: “Shlomo Leib ben Miriam”

  9. No doubt the guidance and hadrocho of all of those listed above will be felt resoundingly by all. No doubt they will be incredible melitzei yosher for our generation. No doubt they leave us saddened and feeling bereft.

That being said, of those listed above, 27 were over the age of 85, with many in their 90’s and over 100. Many more were in their late 70s and early 80s. Only a few were nifter at a young age, r’l.

Is there a point at which we recognize the rotzon of HKBH in taking back those who he is closest to after a long, full life of Torah? Can we truly read a message or warning in the petirah of someone, however great, who has lived to 106, or who has outlived his children?

Is it honest to say that someone who has lived to the age of 102 has been, as the writer put it, “snatched” from us?

  10. Hello. Nobody lives forever. I am all for doing teshuva, but it is not realistic to blame every single death on our not waking up to tshuva. Wake up and realize that this kind of dramatic nonsense is foolish.

  11. I don’t understand the point of this. Did you expect any mortal, gadlus and tzidkus aside, to live forever? That’s the way of the world.
We need to learn from their wonderful lives and improve ourselves – 100%, but I fail to see the point of listing which rabbinim dies in the past 2-3 years.

  12. This is all numerator and no denominator. Therefore, it has no validity whatsoever.

Of course, we should do teshuvah. That’s what that ram’s horn they’ve been blowing for two weeks now is all about.

  13. Yehudah, you are certified! You worship death! You accusations & finger pointing come from your Eiyin Rah! You are constantly choshed biksherim Klal Yisroel!

  14. There is such a concept as TEVA,,,,,and the way of hakodosh baruch hoo is that the physical body starts to break down and diminish as it enters the 6th decade (60 years old).

Our world is losing leadership and gedolim while BH we are grooming, establishing and fortunate to have those who are stepping up to the plate…

Tshuva is an essential daily avodah especially in the days leading up to YOM KIPPUR.

  15. Indeed, as the comments above point out this article is not realistic, people are niftar at a ripe age is part of the world we live in.

BUT YES!! WE HAVE TO WORRY. THERE ARE SERIOUS THREATS ON KLAL YISROEL! WE ARE DEALING WITH THOSE ISSUES WITH OUT PROPER LEADERSHIP AND MESORAH. DO WE UNDERSTAND WHAT IS GOING ON THE WORLD TODAY??? DO WE KNOW WHAT IT MEANS THAT WE ARE STILL IN GOLUS?? Will we wake up from the illusion that goulus can be semi ended before Moshiach comes?

  16. How much longer will it take to learn? When will we wake up and do teshuvah?
We are losing people right and left. Our gedolim and rabbonim are being snatched from us. When will it end?

What does when will it end mean? No one dies anymore? We are losing people right and left? I don’t see that. Dying is a part of life and they certaintly did not die young; with very few exceptions.

  17. People do not pass away due to old age !
People pass away when its time for their souls to leave the world – old age is just the mask Hashem uses to allow us free choice

  18. Rav Brevada, may he have a speedy refua shleima spoke about this topic in Jerusalem. He referenced the Rambam, that when tzoros befall us, if one says “this is the way of the world”, he is an achzar. And he connected this to the current tzoros, the loss of many roshei yeshiva, gedolim, and korbonos like Leiby K. And yes, he was referring to individuals 90. 100, and 102 years old.

We should be zoche to teshuva just the same.

  19. “12. Comment from Davening Time
    Time September 4, 2012 at 8:25 AM

Please ask your friends all over the world to continue Davening reciting Tehillim learn Torah and contribute to Tzodakah as a Zechus for the famous Magid of the generation Harav Shlomo Brevda Shlita, who is in need of a Refuah Sheleimah.

The Rav Shlita asked that the Olam should please Daven for him, his condition is critical and painful.

The name for Tehillim is: “Shlomo Leib ben Miriam”

This plea piqued my interest to find out more about this learned rabbi.

Yes, the Rav Shlita has a website and yes, the Rav Shlita’s website is nothing but a moneymaking machine.

If one wants to learn from Harav Shlomo Leib ben Miriam Shlita first one has to pay.

Nevertheless, I wish Rav Brevda arichut yamim and refuah shelemah umehirah.

  20. What I think the point Matzav is trying to make is that if Moshiach would be here, and techiyas Hameisim would have occured then these gedolei yisroel would still be with us today. We need to do teshuva in order that Moshiach should come now, and the light of these giants will return once again.

  21. When we try to point out that the wacko who wrote this pathetic article is a hypocrite because he lectures others while he goes on the internet which the Rabbonim clearly Assured, you won’t allow such a truth to be published! It shows how shallow Matzav is!

  22. To #28
please re-read what you wrote and let me know if that makes you happier or more upset about the list and the descriptors

  23. “There is such a concept as TEVA,,,,,and the way of hakodosh baruch hoo is that the physical body starts to break down and diminish as it enters the 6th decade (60 years old).”

Minor nitpick: A person starts his sixth decade when he’s 50, not sixty. When he’s sixty, he’s *finishing* his sixth decade.

Look at it this way… when you’re born, do you start your 0th decade, or your first? Of course, you start your first… you finish it when you’re ten, which is when you start your second decade.

    The Wolf

  24. to everyone wondering & thinking that 70s & 80s is the time to die. its actually pretty young when compared to 120 or even to 100
BUT 70’S OR 80’S IN HEALTH IS YOUNG TO BE NIFTAR.

look at the dates of Niftar. so close-knit one from the next is this coincidence? we used to hear once every 3 months that a tzaddik was niftar R”L

how do we lose all this in such A SHORT SPAN OF TIME? is this just coincidence?

when one message from hashem happens & we don’t learn from it, Hashem hates to but has no choice but to send us another wake-up call

LETS MAKE A STOP TO GEDOLIM LEAVING US lets stop it now asap

in regards to losing children in tragic events, i never made a list but i’m sure everyone can remember many just in the past year alone. remember 12 yr. old in sand beach in deal NJ? car with parents & 6 children in Israel & went over the hill flying? Vogel family in Israel? Leiby Kletzky? lakewood lost 2-13 year old boys a few months ago?

in regards to How do we do teshuva? Can you please serve as an example? Thank you

i can tell you that Hashem is not waiting for the yom kippur teshuva. Hashem is waiting for the pre-geula teshuva movement. (between people) & achdus in klal yisroel.
how do i know if i’m in Hashem’s pre-geula teshuva movement, its the teshuva where noone will be afraid to confront his friend to ask mechila even a year later (cause i said lashon hara on you C”V) noone will be afraid to return $100.00 he charged someone extra cause he’s rich C”V

While Rav Yisroel salanter ZT”L started the mussar movement, this movement is not about learning seforim & Shaaarei teshuva of the RAMCHAL. this is Hashem waiting for us to return to achdus (on all levels from frum to frei & chassidish etc…) & the teshuva movement between people.

May we all start ASAP towards bringing mashiach to come

MATZAV please post this as a separate new reply letter as this newsletter is already a few days old & it will be a big zchus towards teshuva & the bringing of Mashiach b’karov

    THANK YOU

  25. This piece was meant for Purim not Yom Kippur. Yom “HaKiPurim”. Remember the “Hah” because that’s all this article did was make me say “Hah, Hah, Hah”!
