mta-bus1Dear Editor,

A gutten moed to all.

Yesterday morning, the first day of Chol Hamoed Sukkos, I was on Coney Island Avenue at the corner of Avenue K in Flatbush, Brooklyn, when I saw the license plate of a car in the bus stop light up on the front of the bus. I then learned the newest method being used to issue parking tickets.

You may have noticed the newest fleet of MTA buses, and each of them is now equipped with a camera linked to the Parking Violations Bureau. If a bus pulls into a bus stop and there is a car there – even if the car is running and not in park – the bus camera takes a picture of the license plate and the registered owner of the plate photographed will be sent a parking ticket in the mail. This is a $165 ticket. It uses the same system as the red light cameras located at many intersections.

Save yourself the headache and save yourself the money by never pulling into a bus stop for any reason, even if it is just to drop someone off or pick someone up. The city has found a way to raise more money and with the picture of your plate at the bus stop it will be very difficult to fight this ticket.

Make sure everyone in your family is aware of this.

  1. Comment one is correct. A bus stop is a no standing zone and you are allowed to expeditiously discharge and pickup passengers so I do not believe that a camera in a bus would legally be permitted to take a picture of a car in a bus stop to issue a ticket. A police officer would have to use his/her judgment when issuing such tickets (in which you need a face to face situation). I believe this story is either made up or the person, with good intentions, spread an untrue rumor because this is what he thought was the case.

  2. This is a terrible developement. “Gotcha” Bl$$mberg is turning NYC into Sedom, where Chesed is illegal. Didn’t we have term limits? How is it, that he is still around?

  3. Residents no matter how busy they are should NOT park in Bus Stops. It is difficult for the elderly and handicap to then ascend onto the buses and dangerous for those who are getting off.

The ticket is a deserved violation of city regulations. Thanks for the heads-up and hopefull no standing in bus lanes.

  4. The cameras are NOT mounted on buses. They are on the street, focused on the bus lanes. You should be able to find a list online of where they are located.

  5. Can I in turn take pictures of city busses who do not pull into the bus stop when loading and discharging ppassengers so that they don’t have to struggle to get back into the flow of traffic? Or, is it just a one way deal!

  6. This is NOT true. The city has not installed cameras on buses. There are some cameras being installed in Bus Lanes in Manhattan to snap pictures of people driving in bus lanes. NOT on buses. NOT in Brooklyn.

  7. The New York Times reported in 2010 that the city installed bus lane cameras on certain streets. It added that the city planned to also later put cameras on buses.
