Dear Rabbi Yaakov Bender,
Yeshiva Darchei Torah is a school renowned for its superior chinuch and warmth.
No, we do not have children in the school nor do we have grandsons attending your Mosad.
We did however come into contact with two of your Rebbeim in a chance encounter that left us speechless. The experience showcased the reason that Darchei must enjoy such success with its student body. We feel compelled to share it with you so that you too can schep nachas.
We live in Boro Park but work for Ohel on Seagirt Blvd. Monday night, October 22 we were travelling hore on the Belt Parkway from work. Sudidenly the car lost all power and just died. With no power we had no way to indicate that the car was in distress. We got out of the car and stayed by the median after calling Chaveirim praying that no one crash into the car. After about 30 minutes, a car with two yeshivishe young men pulled up and asked us what the problem was and how they could assist us. These were not Chaveirim volunteers but two Rebbeim from Darchei on the way to a wedding in Lakewood. They attempted to problem solve and came to the conclusion that it was not something Chaveirim could deal with and advised us to call roadside assistance to tow the car. Once the call was made to Geico, we thanked them and told them they should continue onto their simeha. They point blank refused. It was unfathomable to them to abandon two women in what they termed was an “unsafe place”.
There was zero indication of impatience to be on their way. To them it was perfectly natural and normal to help and attempted whatever they could to ease our discomfort. They stayed with us until the tow company arrived and negotiated a better deal where he would tow the car all the way to Boro Park as opposed to the next exit. They offered to drive us home in order not to drive in the tow truck home. They even correctly diagnosed the car trouble- a burnt out alternator…
The mesiras nefesh, incredible warmth, and caring to two strangers was outstanding. What sterling middos!! With such Rebbeim it is no wonder that the student body emerge with the right values. They most certainly have whom to emulate!| And remember that this was during “off hours.”
Rabbi Spiegel and Rabbi Wahl were true malachim that were sent to our ad. We have no connection to them and yet they treated us as if we would be close family. What a pride to have them on your staffl! We apologize that this letter is reaching you a bit late, but we needed time to properly collect our thoughts to convey our deep appreciation and admiration.
No shorteuts -Chessed truly performed to the max]!!!

  1. So what’s the big deal!! That’s why Hashem picked us to be His prized nation! Not to detract from these two exemplary Rabbeyim, who likely treat each of their talmidim just as they did you; do you think any yid would just drive by and ignore you? Hatzoloh, Shomrim, Shmira and Chaveirim world wide are all volunteers who give of their personal comforts – as do their spouses – just give their lives to help others in need. Their days are not days and their nights are not nights! Just to help others in need! And, at times, even put themselves in harms way too! That’s why Hashem chose us! But don’t think the N.Y. Slimes would write your story! It behooves me why any Jew patronizes them.

P.S. Remember the cop who recently got underneath a car belonging to a Jew because, he said, when he was stuck, mind you, in the snow, a Jew stopped to help him. If only we could live this way all the time.

“So what’s the big deal!! ….. do you think any yid would just drive by and ignore you?”

Some might just drive by, yes. They might say/assume, oh, they must be waiting for Chaverim, or a family member.

Others might stop, ask what’s the matter, hear that Chaveirim was called, give good wishes and continue driving along.

“Hatzoloh, Shomrim, Shmira and Chaveirim world wide are all volunteers who give of their personal comforts – as do their spouses – just give their lives to help others in need.”

But these Rabbeim were not members of those organizations (who have special training and equipment) (so it seems)!

And not all members of such organizations are always on the same level.

The point is that the Rabbeim could have sufficed with a minimal offer of assistance, but went much further, even though it was taking them away from another mitzvah they were headed to, and even though other help was (presumably) on the way.

  3. I am reminded of a time, years ago, when I was riding my bicycle from F.R. back to Brooklyn and it got disabled along the way.

    R. Moshe Mandel shlit”a, a YDT Rebbe on the way to Brooklyn, picked me up and took me home.

יישר כחכם to all the holy drivers out there.

    הקב”ה ישלם שכרם

  4. Sorry Mr. Commenter, HOLD ON! I was not negating the greatness of the rabbeyim who stopped. Clearly I didn’t make myself clear! They’re the greatest! I was just showing how we have many super heroes among us that we even take it for granted! These Rabbeyim were on their way to teach Torah to Hashem’s Tashbar! What greater job! On their way they stopped to do an amazing chessed too!
