Devorah Sofer was living every mother’s worst nightmare: Her child was hinging between life, and death. Yaakov’s heart defect meant that he was in and out of hospitals, holding on until his next life-prolonging surgery. Miraculously, the doctors were successful in making him a healthy boy once again.

Devorah thought that was the end of her suffering. Then she lost her husband.

Working to support a large family alone is not a challenge for the weak. Devorah has taken the weight of the world on her shoulders, with 6 kids at home, and has worked hard to raise them to adulthood.

It has been a modest life for them, but a good one. Now, after fears that he would never make it this far, Yaakov is engaged to be married. It should be a dream come true. However for Devorah, it is a reminder of constant fight to keep her family afloat.

Amid the chagim, and marrying off a child, she is unable to keep up. In many ways, she is alone in the world. This Yom Kippur, she will stand in shul. Surely, tears will flow, as she prays for her future, and for her childrens’ future.

Donations to the Sofer family are being collected via an emergency fund. Together, we have the opportunity to answer Devorah’s prayers. Just days before Yom Kippur, this is the time to help a suffering family.

  1. ‘Together, we have the opportunity to answer Devorah’s prayers.’ Should be changed to ‘Together we have the opportunity to be the shlichim of Hashem Yisborach’s kindness in answering Devorah’s prayers.’
