visiting-dayThousands of families are heading to the Catskills today for the first visiting day of summer 2014. All drivers are urged to leave ample time for traveling. Drivers are encouraged to follow posted speed limits, as State Police troopers are on patrol on the highways. The troopers sit with their radar guns, and drivers who do not follow the reduced speed-limits in certain zones will be ticketed.

  1. B”H, my wife & I agreed that we are NOT shlepping all the way up to the Catskills & back this year. We spoke to our younger son a long time ago, when we made his Camp plans, that we were not going to come on visiting day, as this is his 3rd year there. He was Maskim. The Camp has a special program for the boys who’s Parents don’t come. Its a win win situation for both, the Parents & the campers. Hopefully “visiting day” lol, as we know it, will be a thing of the past.

PS. My older children, who are staff members, say sih paas nisht for us to visit. “Its very uncool”

  2. For those who are planing to come to the mountains, please remember to act with courtesy and make a Kiddush Hashem. We live here all year long and suffer if you do not act with respect to the local people.

  3. Heshy, Speaking to your child before the summer doesn’t replace the hurt that they feel when everybody else’s parent comes to visit. I was a counselor for many years and saw the pain on their faces.
I hope they’ll have a special program for you in the nursing home so your children won’t have to come visit.

  4. mythoughts, that’s really interesting. Maybe Heshy’s kids said, that’s ok, Totty, we really appreciate the work you do to be able to send us, and all you got for us to take with us. We’ll do our best to bring them back. We’ll miss you but we can get by without seeing you for a few weeks. If you manage to get in any extra learning today, I’m honored to have part of that zechus.

And I bet Heshy tracks down his kids’ counselors etc. to send them their tips along with a nice thank you note.

A looong time ago I sent kids to the mountains but living a bit west of the Hudson, visiting day wasn’t an option. My kids were not scarred.
