rabbi-shlomo-amarAt the wedding this past Monday night of the oldest granddaughter of Rav Shlomo Moshe Amar, Sefardi chief rabbi of Israel, the baalei simcha were devastated when they discovered that large sums of money and many checks that guests had given the chosson and kallah had been stolen.

When the wedding came to a close shortly before midnight, the mother of the kallah, Rav Amar’s daughter, begin to pack the envelopes of the gifts and put them into her bag. For a brief moment, the mother put the bag on a chair in the women’s section, intending to keep an eye on the cash gifts estimated in the thousands of shekels. Unfortunately, she briefly looked away from the bag, and as soon as she looked over to see where her bag was, she saw three girls rummaging through it.

According to a source, when the girls – whose approximate ages were not released – saw the mother looking at them, they immediately ran away with most of the envelopes in their hands. Rav Amar’s daughter and another woman began running after them into the streets of Bayit Vegan, where the wedding took place, in a desperate attempt to catch the thieves.

The owner of the hall and other employees also gave chase, pursuing the three girls who had stolen the contents of the bag, but the girls disappeared and could not be apprehended.

A source stated that at the entrance to the hall there apparently was an elderly woman who helped the girls by reporting to them the goings-on in the hall and when they’d be able to enter unnoticed.

Rav Amar’s daughter came to him heartbroken, seeking advice. He sought to comfort her and added, “We have to pray that members of Klal Yisroel will have what they need so that they do not have to resort to stealing.”

  1. The last line says it all. What a gadol Rav Amar is! It reminds us of the story about the Chofetz Chaim, who saw someone stealing after him and ran after him shouting “I forgive you! I forgive you!”

Rav Amar sees what is happening in the world now, and let us pray with him that HKBH grants his wish.

  2. if “ain me’arvin simcha b’simchah”, and middah tovah yoser mi’midah pur’onus, then certainly ain me’arvin tzara b’simchah!
