Birthday (1566 BCE) and yahrtzeit (1441 BCE) of Dan ben Yaakov Avinu (Midrash Tadshe)

Rav Chisdai ben Shmuel HaKohen Perachia (1678). He was the author of responsa called Toras Chessed. He died in Salonika (then Turkey, now Greece).

Rav Avraham Shimshon HaKohen of Rashkov, son of the Toldos Yaakov Yosef. He was one of talmidim of the Besht that went to Eretz-Yisrael

Rav Yosef Yoel Deutsch, Av Beis Din and first Rav of Kretchinef (1858). He also served as Dayan in Tarnopol from 1832 to 1839, and Rav in Manistrich in Galicia from 1846. He authored Yad Yosef, a collection of 124 responsa on the four sections of Shulchan Aruch. His son, Rav Dovid Nosan Deutsch, wrote Nefesh Dovid.

Rav Moshe Sheinfeld (1935). He was known for his articles which appeared in Digleinu (the newspaper of Z.A.I. – Tze’irei Agudas Yisroel).

Today in History – 8 Elul

· Jewish resistance to Roman forces came to an end with the fall of the walls of the upper city of Yerushalayim, 70 C.E.
· Russian Emperor appoints a commission to study injurious influences of Jews upon the native population, 1881.
· Shechita was banned in Switzerland, 1893. (The ban is still in effect and the Jewish community gets its meat from other neighboring countries.)
· The Italian Fascist government surrendered unconditionally to Allied troops which had crossed from the northern coast of Africa to first take Sicily, then into Italy proper, 1943. Unfortunately, the Germans poured their forces into Italy and held the line at the south of Naples.
