  1. (This comment is about yesterday, 21 Kislev. As the Matzav article for yesterday’s information though, is now long past, I will place this comment here, with the next day’s article. IY’H, next year, B’li Neder, I will make sure to have it posted in the exact day’s article.)

In the year 1941, yesterday’s date of 21 Kislev was December 11, which was four days after the devastating bombing of Pearl Harbor. Adolf Hitler, Yimach Shemo V’Zichro, in tremendous euphoria over the attack, had already decided that he would join Japan in its new war with the U.S. On this day, he gave a long rambling speech to the Reichstag, in which he blammed the United States for the international conflicts. He further announced that there had been that day in Berlin a joint declaration — by Germany, Italy, and Japan — of war on the United States.

In response, President Roosevelt sent a message to Congress, which in turn, by unanimous* votes, issued declarations of war on Germany and Italy.  (*The congresswoman who had voted against the Japan declaration, this time merely abstained.) The day thus marked the full entry of the United States into World War II.

(December 7, 1941, with its Pearl Harbor event, is always presented as the day when the U.S. was “plunged” into WWII. The truth though is, that as at that moment the fight was just with Japan, the U.S. then really had only one foot in the door. When on December 11, there were the official declarations with the other enemy axis powers of Germany and Italy, the U.S. was now fully in the war.)

  2. Is this the Avraham Hager who is buried next to the Vilna Goan?

I thought his Yartzeit was the Second day of Shavous?

    If its possible please clarify.

Either Way May it be in his Zchus that Klal Yisrael Should Be Zoche To Kedusha V’Tahara and Yiras Shomayim.
