ben-brafman[Live phone info below.] An important gathering for men will take place tonight at the Ohr Hachayim Viznitz Hall, located at 1824 53rd Street, in Boro Park, Brooklyn. The asifa, which is being sponsored by community askonim, will be focusing on the timeless theme of “Vi’asisa hayashar vi’hatov.” It will feature two distinguished rabbonim, Rav Avrohom Schorr, and Rav Dovid Ozieri, as well as two respected legal experts, Benjamin Brafman, Esq. (seen above) and Jacob Laufer, Esq. Rabbi Chaim Dovid Zweibel will serve as the chairman. The event will begin with Mincha at 7:15 p.m., followed by the program.

“Introspection about how to better live our lives in consonance with Torah ideals is always timely. It is particularly timely during the days leading up to Tisha B’Av, when we mourn the fact that we remain in Golus, and the reasons why,” commented RabbI Zweibel.

“I don’t think I can adequately convey how compelling this gathering should be to us all. But I am confident that you realize how vital it is that we hear words of mussar and chizuk, and that we learn to distinguish between conduct that conforms with dina d’malchusa and conduct that does not. I am also confident that you understand how important it is to demonstrate to the wider world how heartfelt and determined Jews respond to news like the tragic tidings of recent days,” concluded Rabbi Zweibel.

Update: Matzav.com has been informed by organizers of the event that the asifa will be accessible by phone through Kol Hamevaser by calling 212-444-1100, then pressing 8, and then 1.

  2. This is a great event! Can matzav please report what they said at the asifa afterwards for the followers in israel

  3. In our office, everybody is anxious whether we are going to hear something refreshingly new. Like, how terrible and discusting it is to walk around with somebody else’s (jew or gentile) money in your pockets.
Or is it going to be the same old, same old: “Don’t get caught because of the huge Chilul Hashem”.

  4. READ THE UPDATE. IT SAYS THAT the asifa will be accessible by phone through Kol Hamevaser, by calling 212 444-1100, then pressing 8, then 1.

  5. There is a relatively new and wonderful organization Machon L’Choshen Mishpat that is committed to providing awareness and education in all areas of financial halacha.

People who do things they know are wrong won’t benefit from learning. BUT our community as a whole COLLECTIVELY enables such things by not being educated about the halachos. Scandals DO NOT happen in a vacuum. They happen when a society is not vigilant in those areas.

Its time we started seeing dikduk halacha perhaps even “chumros” with regard financial halachos e.g. paying on time, mekach taus, reneging on employment and rental agreements, etc etc. We need to learn the halachos keep them carefully and perhaps even be machmir (could we imagine such a thing…..)

  6. I am not sure our community collectively keeps people uneducated. Boruch Hashem there are MANY poskim, in cities across the US, who are available to answer all types of money questions, when asked.
Many do ask, but there are some who would rather not ask, lest they be told they are doing wrong.

Nonetheless, the forum tonight is a terrific proactive approach to all these scandals. May Hashem protect us all!
