hershey-friedman[Link below.] Tonight, Wednesday, 22 Teves/December 29, a great celebration will take place. However, in order to appreciate its true significance, let us go back several years to another major celebration.

It was a momentous occasion, marking a major milestone in the history of Torah study. Taking place at the prestigious Avenue Hall in Lod, it was graced by the presence of gedolei hador and prominent admorim and rabbonim. Masses of people were in attendance,  united by their love and respect for Torah, for those who study it, and for those who support it.

The gathering marked the completion of the publication of the Oz v’Hadar Friedman Edition of Talmud Bavli, under the leadership of Rav Yehoshua Leifer.

This “Siyum Hashas” represented the culmination of years of diligent labor. Painstaking research and attention to detail ensured that the texts were accurate. Commentaries were added to provide elucidation and furnish the accomplished talmid chochom and novice alike with an invaluable aid which greatly enhances the learning experience. Much attention was also devoted to the typeface and layout to ensure that the text would be easy on the eye.

The event celebrated this achievement, while at the same time paying tribute to an outstanding  philanthropist, Reb Hershy Friedman of Montreal, whose vision, love of Torah and generosity helped bring this project to fruition. Mr. Friedman’s name is well-known around the globe, and he is respected as a man who appreciates the importance of Torah study, and one who  translates that appreciation into support on a massive scale.

One of the highlights of the event was the announcement by Rav Leifer that Reb Hershy would continue his great service to Klal Yisroel by supporting  a new project, the Oz V’Hadar edition of Talmud Yerushalmi. This declaration was met with enthusiasm and joy.

The need for such an undertaking has been steadily growing, and is now keenly felt, more than ever. There has long been an increasing interest in the Talmud of Eretz Yisroel among talmidei chachomim and all bnei Torah. This interest was given great impetus thanks to a call by Rav Aharon Leib Shteinman at the above-mentioned Siyum Hashas. After elaborating about the essentiality of Torah, Rav Shteinman expressed his sincere wish and hope that “with Hashem’s help, there will be a Talmud Yerushalmi version of the Oz v’Hadar Shas.”

Given the reputation of Oz V’Hadar for attention to detail and accuracy, for providing thorough and easy-to-understand notes that greatly facilitate the comprehension of the Gemara and its commentaries, and for producing volumes that are a joy to study from, lomdei Torah all over the world  are very much looking forward to the Oz V’Hadar edition of the Yerushalmi.

At the celebration, tonight,  Rav Leifer, with Reb Hershy Friedman at his side, will present the inaugural volumes of the Oz V’Hadar Friedman edition of the Talmud Yerushalmi. The event will take place in the Keser Harimon Hall in Bnei Brak.

In the weeks leading up to this event, Rav Leifer visited many leading rabbonim to obtain their haskamah and bracha. They were effusive in their praise of this project, bestowing their blessings and noting what a great zechus it is to open up a universe of Torah study and enable  lomdei Torah to satisfy their thirst for Talmud Yerushalmi.
