senator-robert-menendezNJ Sen. Bob Menendez, a senior Democrat on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, told The Daily Beast today that the deal between the U.S. and Iran is not all it’s cracked up to be for three reasons.

“No. 1 is that we are recognizing Iran as a threshold nuclear state. Two, that we are not ending Iran’s nuclear program. We are preserving it. Three, that we were supposed to have as one of our red lines anytime, anywhere inspections…. While under this agreement, there is a process that takes nearly a month before you would ever get access to the site. Within a month, you can clean up the site. So that’s a problem.”

Menendez would not say how he will vote. “I’m not ready to do anything until I read the agreement.”

  1. It is not a good deal. Even President Obama would probably concede that. The questions are: 1) Is it better than no deal, or does this deal actually make things worse by freeing multiple Iranian billions that can and will be used for terror? 2) Could a better deal have been had? Clearly Obama believes the answers to the above questions are 1) Yes, it’s better than no deal and 2) It’s the best we could get. I have grave reservations about Obama’s judgement on this, especially based on Prime Minister Netanyahu’s strong disagreement. Netanyahu’s only dog in the fight is Israeli security and I take his statements at face value.
