moshe-gefenIt is with great sadness that we report the passing of Rav Moshe Gefen zt”l, rosh mesivta at Yeshiva Bais Yitzchok of Chadeira, who was killed in a tragic train accident yesterday. He was just 54 years old.

Rav Gefen had been returning home yesterday morning and was crossing over the train tracks in Chadeirah. He had apparently seen a first train pass before crossing the tracks, but did not notice a second train coming from the other direction.

The levaya was held yesterday at Yeshiva Bais Yitzchok in Chadeira, followed by a levaya at the Lederman Shul on Rechov Rashbam in Bnei Brak. Kevurah took place at the Ponovezher Bais Hachaim.

Rav Gefen was a well-respected talmid chochom who influenced countless talmidim with his care and concern. His passing has left a painful void in Chadeirah and in the hearts of the many people who knew him.

Rav Gefen had spent Motzoei Yom Kippur immersed in limud haTorah in a shul in the Neve Chaim neighborhood, and had davened kevoskin before returning home. Just a day before, on Yom Kippur, Rav Gefen had served as the baal Shacharis at the yeshiva in Chadeirah.

Rav Gefen’s father, Rav Shmuel Gefen, was one of the chashuvei Yerushalayim and a close talmid of the Brisker Rov. Rav Gefen learned at the Ponovezh Yeshiva and married his rebbetzin, a daughter of Rav Tzvi Kaplan zt”l, rosh kollel in Tel Aviv. Following his marriage, Rav Gefen joined the kollel at Ponovezh and, shortly thereafter, was appointed as a rosh mesivta at Yeshiva Bais Yitzchok in Chadeirah, where he served for 25 years, raising numerous talmidim with love, sensitivity and a high level of learning.

Rav Gefen devoted himself with boundless dedication to limud haTorah, spending hours in his room engaged in uninterrupted learning. He was proficient in all areas of Torah, and delivered phenomenal shiurim and shmuessen to the bochurim of the yeshiva. He knew all the shiurim of his rebbi, Rav Shmuel Rozovsky, rosh yeshiva of Yeshiva Ponovoezh, by heart, and would relate them to his talmidim.

Rav Gefen merited for his children to marry descendants of renowned Torah mishpachos. They include the grandchildren of Rav Aharon Leib Shteinman, Rav Chaim Kanievsky, Rav Dovid Solovetichik and lhbcl”c Rav Michel Yehudah Lefkowitz zt”l. Five of his seven children are married.

Umacha Hashem dimah mei’al kol ponim.

Yehi zichro boruch.

Hashem has been taking many tzadikim lately from us. Think this is also one of the signs of the Geulah. May his name and memory be for a blessing! May they all return to us soon.
