candle-small5[Levaya and donation information below.] Tragedy struck the Flatbush, Brooklyn, community on the night of Shemini Atzeres as a fire claimed the life of an 8-year-old boy. The blaze Wednesday night broke out as Rabbi and Mrs. Yaakov and Chana Krasny were in their sukkah on the second floor of their apartment on Avenue P, between Coney Island Avenue and East 12th Street, at about 9:30 p.m.

Reb Yaakov and his wife heard their sons and daughters screaming about a fire and ran into the home to try to pull out their six children. Mrs. Krasny attempted to soothe her terrified children, holding the hand of her youngest, Miriam, repeating, “Mommy’s here with you.”

Reb Yaakov heroically ran into the burning home multiple times and rescued five of his children, but tragically couldn’t reach his 8-year-old son, Avigdor, trying to escape the flames through a third-floor window.

Firefighters could not rescue him as he had suffered severe smoke inhalation.

Avigdor was seen by witnesses running back and forth in front of his bedroom window before he disappeared in the choking smoke of the three-alarm fire. He was trapped in his bedroom and had no way out.

Fire Chief Michael Marone said the “flames were substantial and [Avigdor] was trapped in his bedroom.

krasny-fire“It was very tough to get him out because the flames were at the very top, which is where he was trapped.”

The house is located two doors down from the Manhattan Lights lighting store at the corner of Coney Island Avenue and Avenue P.

Neighbors told Matzav.com that the flames shot out of the roof and could be seen from blocks away. It took more than an hour to get the three-alarm blaze under control.

A 10-year-old boy, a 7-year-old boy, a 5-year-old girl and a 3-year-old boy were all taken to the burn unit at Staten Island University Hospital.

1-year-old Miriam was in serious condition.

The cause of the fire is still unknown, though a fire official at the scene said that he believes the blaze started in the kitchen.

According to officials, about 20 people were in the house at the time of the fire.

The Krasnys lived on the third floor of the home, which is owned by Reb Mechel Rosenbaum, a son of Rav Yosef Rosenbaum, rov of Khal Ginzei Yosef on Avenue R in Flatbush.

Reb Yaakov Krasny is a dedicated mispallel at Bais Yisroel Torah Center on Ocean Parkway, Rav Avigdor Miller’s shul, which is now led by Rav Eliyahu Brog. Reb Yaakov, a close talmid of Rav Miller, is a distinguished member of the kollel at the Mirrer Yeshiva in Flatbush and a noted talmid chochom and yorei Shomayim.

The community has been plunged into mourning due to the tragedy.

Rav Osher Kalmanowitz, rosh yeshiva of the Mirrer Yeshiva, made an appeal this morning in the yeshiva to assist the family and followed up by visiting several neighborhood shuls in Flatbush to make appeals for the grieving family.

Matzav.com will provide further appeal information soon.

Levaya information is not yet finalized.

Boruch dayan emes.

Umacha Hashem dimah mei’al kol ponim.

Update: The levaya will be held tomorrow, Sunday, at noon, at Bais Yisroel Torah Center, located on Ocean Parkway, between Avenues R and S, in Flatbush.

  1. What a choshuve talmid chochom! Reb Yaakov is a choshuve Yid. I was there by the appeal today in the Mir. We were all crying. Rabbi Trenk went around taking bids. Reb Yaakov and his rebbetzin are great people, we must help them.

  2. I mamash cried when i read this matzav article. But it must be mentioned how turned off i was reading about this tragedy on another site. was written like a little kid enamered by how the fdny responded and just busy praising officials. Its like a little kid who likes to hang around all the police cars and watch them rather then focusing on the more important aspects of such a tragedy.

Matzav has written an article that is a kovod achron for the niftarim and something that brings out emotion from klal yisorel to feel apart of this tzarah.

  3. gevald (Number 3), I agree with you 100%

Many Shuls in the neighborhood made appeals on Shmini Atzeres and this morning (Shabbos).

May we hear of no more tzorros.

  4. I think the krasnys used to live in Las Vegas many years ago
They joined Yiddishkeit and inspired eeveryone.
    Grea, great people.

  5. I saw the house. The inspectors condemned the whole house and the Rosenbaums had to move out too for the rest of Yom Tov. The upstairs was gutted totally.

  7. I join the family in their mourning. I plan on sitting shivah this Sunday morning for them. I will come home from shul and sit until 3 p.m. mourning this tragedy. We are all brothers and we have all just lost a child. boruch dayan haemes.

  8. Everything you wrote about the Krasnys is true – and more. They are the absolutely most special people I have ever met. This could not have happened to more special people. We must help them any way we can

  9. fyi; this is a family of geirim who had very little and now have nothing!!

I know them personally special people

    please help!!!!

  10. When a tragedy of this magnitude hits klal yisroel there’s always three things that must be addressed. The first to be ‘mishtatef ‘in the pain of another yid – one cannot imagine what this family is going through. And second to strengthen our ‘emunah’ in H-shem and realize that after all is said, it only happened because that was the rotzoin of Hashem and that everything Hashem does is for the good. And thirdly one has to be very careful not to speak negative or badly about Hashem that how could he do this or even to say every day another tragedy or what’s next, as if to imply that all is bad and all is wrong c”v. WHEN A PERSON IS A TRUE PERSON OF FAITH & TRUST IN HASHEM. HE GETS TO BE THE HAPPIEST PERSON IN THE WORLD. This is a nisayon for the parents in bitachon & emunah in hashem (just like aharon hakohen when his children died he was quiet & had faith in Hashem…). If its not possible for a person to pass a test from Hashem he is not given the test. Its a time like this that one has to remind oneself of all the ‘hatovah’ and all the chesed that H-shem does for all of us ALL the time.
Every person has a job to fulfill in this world. now the child has done his job & is ready to go to the olam ha’emes (true world)& you two special people (parents) were the chosen agents of Hashem to take care of this child. May hashem reward you for this.& may his neshama have an aliyah & your lives be filled with only Simcha.

  11. TO #22 A MAVEN & everyone else
the way to get out of this golus & all the pain we are going through is 1)to show Hashem that we want to- Hashem is waiting for the day to bring us back his Shechina (Presence) & his Bais Hamikdosh but we just dont seem to be ready. are we really grieving over the bais Hamikdosh on Tisha B’av? or are we just living a life of Luxury with everything Hashem Gave & continues to give us planes. computers, cars etc…
2)everyday Hashem says to the Malachim look how happy my children are down on earth. i gave them everything. let me leave my Bais Hamikdosh up in heaven when they cry out for it i will give it back to them.

  12. HaShem should send comfort to the family, and we can just say it is time for Geula Shleima. Our people have suffered, but we are holding on. We are doing mitzvos, we are trying hard, I pray for Moshiach to pull us out of this.
Yidden, have Ahavas Yisroel, it is the ikkar zach.
