candle-small5[Updated below.] East Brunswick, NJ – A frum couple walking home from shul today were killed when a driver, a 49-year-old woman, lost control of her car and hit them and three other pedestrians.

The husband and wife were coming from the Young Israel in East Brunswick.

They were both 51 years old.

The two niftarim were pronounced dead at the scene shortly before 1 p.m. at the intersection of Dunhams Corner Road and Hardenburg Lane.

The three other injured pedestrians and the driver of the vehicle were taken to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick.

One of the pedestrians was a 27-year-old son of the husband and wife who were killed.

All the pedestrians were coming from the Young Israel in East Brunswick.

The Young Israel, on Dunhams Corner Road, is led by Rabbi Jay Weinstein, who, with his wife Sharon and two children, joined the Young Israel in 2010 from Dallas, Texas, where Rabbi Weinstein had served since 2007 as assistant rabbi at Congregation Shaare Tefilla.

No charges have been filed against the driver of the vehicle and an investigation is active and continuing. Neighbors told news outlets that the driver was speeding and trying to cut a right turn before the light turned red when the car jumped the curb.

At the time of the accident, which took place on the second to last day of the year, just a day before Erev Rosh Hashanah, the driver was heading west on Dunhams Corner Road when she lost control of her Toyota, crashing into a utility pole, smashing into the five pedestrians, and then banging into a guardrail.Levaya details will be posted when they become available.

Umacha Hashem dimah mei’al kol ponim.

Update: The niftarim, Ari and Sari Horowitz z”l, are being mourned by their shul and the greater community. They are survived by two children and two grandchildren.

Ari, a former president of the Young Israel in East Brunswick, was an insurance broker with Allstate Insurance in Morganville, NJ.

The tragedy occurred shortly after the Young Israel announced that it would be honoring Ari and Sari at its upcoming annual benefit dinner.

Ari’s and Sari’s son, Ami, 29, was injured in the accident, sustaining a broken collarbone, ankle and elbow.

The couple injured in the accident are Harris and Hadar Bram.

All are asked to say Tehillim for the full recovery of Amiyad Nissim ben Sarah Frumah, Yerachmiel Nosson ben Leba, and Hadar Yocheved bas Chayah Sarah.

The levaya for Ari and Sari Horowitz will take place today, at 1 p.m., at the Young Israel of East Brunswick, located at 193 Dunham Corners Road. Kevurah is scheduled to take place in Eretz Yisroel.

  1. The other pedestrians were another frum couple here are their names:
    Yirachmiel Natan ben Leba
    Hadar Yocheved bat Chaya Sarah

The name of the son is Amiad Nissim ben Ari David (I don’t have the mothers name at this time).

They are all in critical condition

  2. Yidden all over the world are asked to continue reciting Tehillim and learn Torah as a Zechus for famous Magid of the generation Harav Shlomo Brevda Shlita, who is in need of a BIG Refuah Sheleimah.

Rav Brevda is one of the most well-known Maggidei Shiur and Darshanim and has delivered thousands of Drashos in Jewish communities worldwide.

Rav Brevda is the author of numerous Sforim, including volumes on Yomim Tovim. His writings on the Torah of the Vilna Gaon and the Gaon’s Sforim in Aggadah and Kabbolah are particularly well known.

The name for Tehillim is: “Shlomo Leib ben Miriam”

Please continue Davening for Shloma Leib ben Miryam, day and night!

  3. the two Niftarim were very special to the Community & he used to be president of the Shul &

The deaths occurred just moments after being announced in Shul as this year’s honorees at the Young Israel of East Brunswick’s annual dinner.

May their Neshamos have an aliya & may we all do teshuva & never hear from tragic sadness again

may everyone have a kesiva vechasima tova

  4. #5, why do you continuosly insert the Tehilim for Rav Brevda and ignore the request for the tehilim for these victims as well? After all this story is about these victims. While its important to have Rav Brevda in mind at all times, what is the point of not requesting us to say tehilim for these victims asw well?

  5. According to inside sources, the driver of the car had a loose dog in the car that jumped into the driver’s lap causing the driver to lose control.
