doctor-hospitalA fateful mistake was made today at Barzilai Hospital in Ashkelon, when a woman was brought in to have a cesarean section and had a tubal ligation, accidentally, instead.

Jerusalem Online reports that the surgeon mistakenly thought that this is what the woman wanted.

During the surgery, performed under general anesthesia, the doctor performed a tubal ligation, which is a medical procedure commonly performed during a cesarean section if the woman wishes. However, as she was removed from the operating room, it was made clear to the doctor that the woman had not wanted to undergo the irreversible process.

After the error was discovered, that the woman will not be able to give birth again in the future, her family was notified. As is customary in such cases, Barzilai Hospital updated the Ministry of Health of the mistake that was made.

Two years ago, there was an opposite case in the north. A couple sued Rambam Hospital in Haifa after their tenth son was born because of a failed tubal ligation procedure. The court concluded that the hospital will compensate the couple with 130 thousand shekel.

  1. Why wasn’t written consent required? Does this mean that in Israel a surgeon can always say I thought that’s what he/she wanted? What will happen to this surgeon? Thank you to anyone who has answers.

  2. What a tragedy…

But what is really outrageous is that not the O.R. nurse, nor the anesthesiologist nor the surgical assistant spoke up. In America if one is to undergo this procedure one requires a special STATE consent form with a 30 day waiting period. In addition, you would think that someone in the operating would have the common (decency) sense to ask the patient immediately before the surgery if she was sure she wanted the irreversible procedure.

  3. Dear editor

IF YOU HAVE NOTHING SMART TO WRITE DON’T WRITE ANYTHING! WHY DOES THIS AWFUL STORY HAVE TO BE PUBLICIZED TO HUNDREDS OF PEOPLE?! IS IT GONNA MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN ANYONES LIFE???

  4. It is unbelievably important that all patients – and especially women – have a clear understanding with their doctors of what they do and don’t want. _And it should be in writing, in the patient’s chart,_ so that if another doctor has to be called in for an emergency the fact is on record.

And it’s the doctor’s responsibility to make sure that consent was given. This doctor should be sued for his/her back teeth and disciplined by the medical community, if not forbidden to practice.

  6. This is a situation where medical professionals explain about complications and then proceed… There are records in the medical community, even scissors/scrub is left inside patients body and sown up only to be discovered 2 years later.

  7. I think it is important to publicize this unfortunate story, So many mistakes are made in medicine, people should be aware, ask questions before they have surgery, and not just sign any papers thrown in front of them-they should be told what they are signing and everything should be explained to them clearly and in writing.

are you one and the same? or 2 separate idiots!? Do you not think that everyone should be aware of the details of his/her impending surgery and possible negative ramifications of said surgery or procedure due an irresponsible doctor, nurse, or any medical practitioner who can make a sometimes irreversible mistake? Yes! This “awful story” can make a difference in many people’s lives and serves a purpose. It will make patients and their advocates aware!

  9. #4, you did not heed the first part of your message. Clearly you are in breach of your boundaries.
This story although heartbreaking is good it made its way to publicity…now at least pregnant woman are aware to triple check that they won’t go through this torcherous error.
