snowUpdated: A mix of slushy snow has started to fall in parts of the Tri-State area as crews and mass transit ready for a wet commute today.

The National Weather Service said snow is expected to spread into the area throughout the morning before mixing with rain later in the day. It should change back to snow before ending in the evening.

While little or no accumulation is expected in New York City and at the coast, the northern and western suburbs will see about 1-3 inches, primarily north and west of I-287.

But as temperatures are expected to drop later in the day, forecasters said icing is possible on roads during the evening commute and are urging drivers to be careful.

In New York City, the Department of Sanitation has issued a snow alert for Tuesday. Officials said workers have been loading salt spreaders in preparation for the wintry storm.

In New Jersey, the northwest and central parts of the state are likely to see the most snow Tuesday, while forecasters are calling for a wintry mix elsewhere.

A winter weather advisory is in effect until 7 p.m. for Sussex, Morris, Somerset, Warren and Hunterdon counties.

In an attempt to minimize delays, ensure service reliability and give customers additional travel options, NJ TRANSIT will be offering system wide cross-honoring on Tuesday.

Customers will be able to use their tickets or passes on buses, trains and light rail.
