Trial for Japan Boys Gets Underway

japan-bochurim1Tefillos continue for Yoel Zev ben Mirel Risa Chava and Yaakov Yosef ben Raizel, the two yeshiva bochurim currently on trial for their lives in Japan for unwittingly trafficking drugs into the country. The trial finally began this week, a year and a half after their initial arrest.

Mordechai Tzivin, the attorney for the two bochurim, Yoel Goldstein and Yosef Greenwald, said that the trial could take anywhere from three to four months, as court is held only three days a week.

Tzivin, who resides in Eretz Yisroel, deals in international law and specializes in cases of Israelis incarcerated overseas.

While the trial began this week, it will take a hiatus and resume in two weeks from now.

Following the trial, it could take another few weeks for a verdict and then another few weeks until a sentence is handed down.

The effort to help the boys continues to be led by Dayan Chaim Yosef Dovid Weiss of Antwerp, Ukrainian Chief Rabbi Rav Yaakov Bleich, Rabbi Aharon Nezri of London, and Reb Meilich Bindiger.

Matzav.com has learned that the third bochur, Yosef Bando (Yosef ben Ita Rivka) – the youngest of the group – who was sentenced back on April 30 to 5-8 years in jail and a $40,000 fine, will likely be able to serve the duration of his sentence in Israel, but not until after the trial of his two friends are completed, as he will likely be called to testify.

This week, the Eidah Hachareidis called an atzeres tefillah on behalf of the boys and asked all chadorim and yeshivos to have their talmidim daven for them. An announcement from the Eidah also calls on all of Klal Yisroel to be mechazeik in bein adam lachaveiro and being dan lekaf zechus as a merit for the boys and other Yidden who find themselves in difficult circumstances. The Eidah also urged people to make Mishebeirachs in shul for the boys.

  2. What are the Rabbonim saying about how to prevent such stories from happening in the future?

I think that someone needs to address the attitude that “we don’t need to listen to the laws of tariffs etc…
