trumpWhile addressing the annual Family Leadership Summit in Ames, Iowa on Saturday, Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump took another shot at John McCain, this time questioning the latter’s status as a war hero. “He’s not a war hero. He’s a war hero because he was captured,” Trump said. “I like people that weren’t captured.” McCain was taken as a prisoner of war for five years during the Vietnam War. Trump, meanwhile, received four student draft deferments between 1964 and 1968 and an additional medical deferment after graduating from the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School.

As he left the stage Saturday, Trump reportedly told political consultant Frank Luntz, “See, I get a standing ovation. Other people don’t.”

Later, when asked about his comments on McCain, Trump denied saying he is not a war hero and said, “If somebody’s a prisoner, I consider them a war hero.” Texas Gov. Rick Perry, who has served in the military, released a statement calling Trump’s comments “a new low in American politics.”

“His attack on veterans make him unfit to be Commander-in-Chief of the U.S. Armed Forces, and he should immediately withdraw from the race for President,” Perry said. Read more at Politico.

  1. John McCain was shot down over Vietnam and very badly injured, then captured by the North Vietnamese. Because his father was a top military commander, McCain was offered the opportunity to be released to the U.S. Despite his severe injuries and torture at the hands of his jailers, McCain followed military protocol and refused release before those who had been held prisoner for longer than he had been. The North Vietnamese took revenge by putting him through hellish torture over next several years, including years in solitary confinement, beatings and other horrific (and illegal) punishments. When McCain was finally released, his permanent injuries included the inability to lift his hands over his head. Yes, McCain is absolutely a hero, suffering unimaginable cruelty at the hands of his barbaric captors for years rather than accept early release and leave his men behind. By contrast, Trump is a sleazy, coarse, vulgar, self-promotional, grotesque oaf who managed to nearly bankrupt a parasitic casino enterprise, had a fraudulent university run in his name, campaigned hypocritically against Catskill gambling to protect his Atlantic City gambling business, destroyed the USFL and got a huge head start in life due to his father Fred’s hard work and success in real estate development. It would be difficult to find a more perfect example of a behaima than Donald Trump.

  2. I have great respect for McCain, met a few times, we have some photos together. However, Trump is right and I truly hope he makes it all the way. Listen to all comments in original context, and you will understand the press nothing else to do.
