President Trump on Tuesday sought to walk back his widely-criticized remarks at a press conference with Russian President Vladimir Putin a day earlier, saying he accepts the U.S. intelligence community’s assessment that Russia interfered in the 2016 election.

But Trump muddled the walk-back by saying that “other people” also could have been involved, a statement similar to remarks he’s made in the past casting doubt on Russia’s involvement.

“I accept our intelligence community’s conclusion that Russia’s meddling in the 2016 election took place,” Trump said, reading from a prepared statement in front of reporters at the White House.

But he added: “Could be other people also. A lot of people out there.”

  1. He did the right thing initially by accepting Putin’s denial. At least in public. What were people thinking, that Trump would publicly accuse Putin of lying and meddling into the American elections to his face?

Doing that would have been risking very bad consequences. Putin certainly would not have said “You are right. I’m a liar and I’m sorry. Please forgive us”

It seems like even now under pressure Trump wants wiggle room to get out of this.

It won’t escalate with Putin not around but even if did now he can always squeeze out of it by saying that he “had to say… in light of new information… we appreciate the Russian information and clarification … I made it clear that I was unsure ….etc”

      • The only time in my life that I’ve ever listened to Sean Hannity is when I got a ride with someone who had him on.

Maybe people like yourself could use your own brains. When you have nothing intelligent to say don’t use the knee-jerk old party line that people think differently because they listen to Sean Hannity and co.

I really fed up with hearing it.

  2. The strength of an Ish Emes, US President Trump. He’s not afraid of going back and clarifying his remarks. He clearly stated: “Russian election meddling took place, but added: “Could be other people also. A lot of people out there.” (In other words, just like the US meddled in Israel’s elections and in other over 80 countries’ elections, and other countries meddled in US eleceions.) and HE STRESSED: “THERE WAS NO COLLUSION WITH RUSSIAN IN 2016”.
