tsaThe Transportation Security Administration’s acting administrator was reassigned Monday after investigators working undercover to smuggle fake explosives and forbidden weapons through TSA airport security were successful in 67 of the 70 tests.

Melvin Carraway, who took over as acting head in January, was reassigned to a DHS program coordinating with local law enforcement agencies, DHS Secretary Jeh Johnson said.

The checks were conducted by Homeland Security Red Teams who posed as passengers. In one test, agents failed to find an explosive strapped to a tester’s back even during pat down.

The nomination for Coast Guard Vice Adm. Pete Neffenger to take over the role permanently is awaiting Senate confirmation. Read more at ABC News.

  1. First of all. there shouldn’t be periodic testing- there should be constant testing to keep TSA employees on their toes and to weed out incompetent, lazy or worse testers. Maybe even institute a reward system for employees who consistently catch the fake terrorists.
Second of all, publicizing the TSA’s failures before corrective measures have been taken is terribly irresponsible. Don’t you think the next underwear bomber or shoe bomber wannabe reads the news?
