Turkish police released a “selfie video” that purports to show the gunman who killed 39 people at an Istanbul nightclub in the early hours of New Year’s Day. The video, which has been broadcast on Turkish television, shows the alleged gunman in Taksim Square filming himself with a cellphone. It isn’t clear if the footage was filmed before or after the mass shooting, in which the assailant reportedly opened fire with an AK-47 on a crowd of more than 600 people inside the Reina nightclub before he fled the scene.

Unconfirmed reports in Turkish media say the man in the video may be connected to a terror cell responsible for the June 2016 attack on Istanbul’s Ataturk Airport that left 45 people dead. Police have not released any information about how they obtained the film or why the man in the video was linked to the massacre. The Islamic State terror group has claimed responsibility for the killings. Eight people have been detained in connection with the attack.
