While most people saw Hurricane Harvey as an unprecedented disaster, Tomer Ben Shushan and his wife, Basya, members of the Chabad-Lubavitch community in Houston, saw it in a different light — an unequaled opportunity yo help others.

When the storms subsided somewhat, with Basya serving as a coordinator, Tomer, 35, and his friend Mishiko, both former soldiers in the Israeli Defense Forces, used a military surplus truck with a small crane drive to Meyerland, an area hit hard by the storm and the center of Houston’s Jewish community.

The first night they searched and rescued people until three in the morning. The worked for two more days, rescuing dozens of people and offering help wherever it was needed.

“We found people floating in their homes, often in water contaminated with feces and sewage,” Tomer told Chabad.org. “People with some serious health conditions, especially the elderly, were completely stranded.”
