U.S. Discovered El Chapo Escape Plots Last Year

Joaquin “El Chapo” GuzmanThe U.S. government said it had intelligence that indicated Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman was planning to break out of a Mexican supermax prison almost as soon as he was arrested in February 2014.

The Drug Enforcement Administration first found out about the Mexican drug kingpin’s plans last March, just after his arrest, according to internal documents.

The plot by his son included hiring former military members to help smuggle him out, and an operation to intimidate prison workers.

On Shabbos, El Chapo escaped prison via a mile-long tunnel equipped with a motorbike mounted on rails. Read more at ABC News.
