isis1Secretary of Defense Ash Carter announced on Saturday morning that U.S. Special Operations Forces killed a senior ISIS commander in the al-Amr in eastern Syria last night.

The operation was aimed at capturing Abu Sayyaf and his wife Umm Sayyaf, Carter said in the emailed statement, but Abu Sayyaf was killed when he “engaged U.S. forces.”

“Abu Sayyaf was involved in ISIL’s military operations and helped direct the terrorist organization’s illicit oil, gas, and financial operations as well,” Carter continued, and added that Umm Sayyaf, whom the U.S. says is a also member of ISIS, was captured. U.S. troops rescued a young Yazidi woman, who Carter said had been enslaved by Umm Sayyaf.

No U.S. troops were injured or killed, he added.
