The government of the United Kingdom announced Monday that it plans to blacklist Lebanon’s Hezbollah as a terrorist organization in its entirety, including its political wing, saying that it could no longer distinguish between the two branches.
Subject to parliamentary approval, the decree will outlaw membership or support for either the group’s militant or political wings as a criminal offence carrying penalties of up to 10 years imprisonment.
The UK had already designated Hezbollah’s External Security Organization and its military arm as terror entities in 2001 and 2008 respectively, but, along with the rest of the European Union, had refrained from blacklisting the group’s powerful political wing.
