Ukraine’s New President Sworn In

ukraine-president-petro-poroshenkoPetro Poroshenko, 48, was sworn in as Ukraine’s new president on Shabbos and immediately began setting out a plan to bring peace to the eastern part of the country.

In his inauguration speech, Poroshenko offered political concessions to people in the east-including an offer of early regional elections and a decentralization of power-and said he does not want war or revenge. However, he also said he told Russia’s president that Crimea, which Russia annexed, would “always be Ukranian.”

Poroshenko has called on separatists in the east to lay down their arms with a promise of indemnity from criminal charges for all those who do not have blood on their hands. Read more at the BBC.
