U.N. Considering Ending Iran Sanctions

Members of the U.N. Security Council have started talks to end sanctions on Iran, according to a Reuters report. The five permanent members-Britain, China, France, Russia, and the United States-have begun discussing with Germany and Iran the possibility of lifting the sanctions if a nuclear agreement is reached.

Most of the focus in the ongoing nuclear negotiations with Iran so far has been on U.S. and E.U. sanctions. However, a U.N. Security Council resolution could be legally binding, according to Western diplomatic officials, while one between the U.S. and Iran allows each president to choose whether to implement and adhere to it.

“If there’s a nuclear deal, and that’s still a big ‘if,’ we’ll want to move quickly on the U.N. sanctions issue,” an official told Reuters. Read more.
