The UN World Food Program resumed sending food to 1.7 million Syrian refugees in Lebanon, Jordan, Turkey, Iraq, and Egypt.
The UN announced the program would be suspended on Dec. 1 due to insufficient funds, but a fundraising drive raised $80 million for the program. Individuals donated $1.8 million, while countries funded the rest.
Those donations will allow families to each receive about $30 per family member by the middle of the month. “This outpouring of support in such a short time is unprecedented,” WFP Executive Director Ertharin Cousin said. Read more.
