United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, who assumed office Jan. 1, said it is “completely clear” that the Har Habayis in Yerushalayim was home to the Bais Hamikdosh.

Guterres told Israel Radio last Friday that it is “completely clear the Temple that the Romans destroyed in Jerusalem was a Jewish temple,” referring to the second of the two Jewish Temples. He added that there is “no doubt” that Jerusalem is holy to all three Abrahamic religions.

On the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, Guterres said he has no intention of pushing for negotiations, but believes in a “two-state solution” and would assist in helping to attain that goal if asked to do so.

Guterres’s comments comes amid ongoing Palestinian attempts to erase the Jewish connection to Jerusalem. Last October, the U.N. cultural body UNESCO passed two Palestinian-backed resolutions ignoring Jewish and Christian claims to the holy sites in Jerusalem.

Palestinian officials were quick to condemn Guterres’s remarks.

“[The statements] are a direct attack on the Palestinian people’s right in the holy city, biased in favor of the site of occupation, and akin to granting legitimacy to Israel’s illegal presence in Jerusalem,” said Fayez Abu Eitah, secretary-general of the Fatah Revolutionary Council.

Ahmad Majdalani, a member of the Palestine Liberation Organization’s executive committee, told China’s Xinhua News Agency that Guterres’s comments “ignored UNESCO’s decision that considered the Al-Aqsa mosque of pure Islamic heritage,” and “violated all legal, diplomatic and humanitarian customs and overstepped his role as secretary-general…and [he] must issue an apology to the Palestinian people.” JNS.ORG

  1. And what part of history do they have with Har Habayis, is that they made it in to a garbage dump as they are a piece of garbage themselves!!!!!

  2. A couple of thoughts:

    1) Negotiations are only possible if both sides are willing to negotiate. More than twenty years after the Oslo Accords there has yet to be a Palestinian leader who’s willing to negotiate. Conversely, every single Israeli prime minister, including “hard right” PMs Sharon and Netanyahu, has made unilateral concessions and been willing to negotiate with no preconditions.

    2) Isn’t it interesting how the “moderate” P.A. is up in arms about the new SecGen’s stating of the obvious Jewish connection to Har HaBayis? Yes, merely mentioning that the Bais HaMikdash existed is enough to inflame the Palestinians.

    3) This crumb that the SecGen has thrown us, small as it is, is more than we usually get from the U.N. I wonder what arrogant, Israel-hating ex-President Obama is thinking about it.

  3. “ignored UNESCO’s decision that considered the Al-Aqsa mosque of pure Islamic heritage,” How does his statement contradict the “Islamic heritage” of the mosque? Certainly Jews did not build the mosque. It clear that Muslims worship there. What is there to ignore? All he said was that the temple which stood on this very spot was a Jewish place of service and was destroyed by the Romans.

  4. As a Secretary General for the UN you should shut up and focus on the present not the history, focus on occupation, illegal settlements, sieges on millions of Gazan, the many thousands of Palestinians illigaly detained and many of Israeli human right violations. Nevertheless, since when a UN secretary general has any value. He is a needed decoration for this failing organizarion.
