The UN political chief is calling for “an independent and transparent investigation” by Israeli authorities into the death of a Palestinian in their custody and is condemning a rocket attack from the Gaza Strip reportedly fired to avenge that death.
Jeffrey Feltman told the Security Council today that the results of the probe into the death of Arafat Jaradat, 30, over the weekend should be made public as soon as possible.
He said the “troubling” rocket fire earlier Tuesday, claimed by the Al Aqsa Martyrs’ Brigades in retaliation, broke the longest period without projectiles fired from Gaza in recent years.”
Feltman urged authorities in Gaza to prevent any recurrence and Israel “to exercise maximum restraint.”
He also urged a resumption of Israeli-Palestinian negotiations, warning that a two-state solution is at stake.
