In the future, visitors to Yerushalayim’s Har Hamenuchos cemetery may descend by elevator to reach subterranean tunnels branching off in five directions. Yedi’ot Yerushalayim reports that due to the expense involved in building the cemetery’s multi-story areas presently in use, an architect has drawn up plans to build underground catacombs which can be constructed at lower cost.

“The lack of space for graves is a complicated issue which involves the city’s planning department to no small extent,” said Meir Turgeman, head of the city’s planning and building committee. “Doubtless, solving the shortage of graves in the city is of prime importance and the solution of tunneling fits many criteria while conforming with the honor due to the dead and with halacha.
